A Message from Administration

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are asking for your support regarding concerns that have recently been raised by several of our neighbours, including nearby businesses, residents, and community organizations.

We have received numerous reports of students gathering in areas adjacent to the school before classes, during lunch, and after school. Community members have expressed concerns related to littering, smoking, trespassing, and other behaviours that have affected private property and the surrounding neighbourhood.

While we cannot confirm whether those involved are LBHS students, this provides an opportunity to encourage all students to continue demonstrating the values of respect, responsibility, and positive citizenship within our community.

As members of the Lord Beaverbrook High School community, our students are ambassadors for our school wherever they go. Respect for others, respect for property, and consideration for our neighbours are important expectations that contribute to positive relationships within the broader community.

School administration will be speaking with students about these concerns and reinforcing expectations around respectful conduct, responsible decision-making, and care for the community spaces they use.

We would also note that the reported concerns relate to activity taking place on private property adjacent to, but separate from, the school. Lord Beaverbrook High School does not supervise these locations, and school staff are unable to monitor student behaviour on private premises. Nevertheless, we will continue to remind students of the importance of respecting neighbouring properties and maintaining positive relationships within our community.

We encourage families to take a few moments to discuss with their children the importance of:

• Respecting private property and remaining in areas where they have permission to be.
• Disposing of garbage appropriately.
• Treating community members with courtesy and respect.
• Understanding that their actions contribute to how both they and their school are perceived within the community.

We value the positive relationships we have with our neighbours and appreciate your support in reinforcing these expectations with your child. Working together, we can help ensure that our students continue to be respectful and responsible members of the Lord Beaverbrook and Acadia communities.

General School Updates

Reminder – Student Drop-Off and Pick-Up

The main staff parking lot is reserved for Staff and Visitors with appointments. It is imperative that it is always kept clear for Emergency Vehicles and First Responders.

Parents are NOT to drop students off or pick them up from school in the main lot at any time. All dropping off and picking up must be done on 90th Avenue. Please consider all of our staff and students’ safety and respect the Do Not Enter signs and the No Parking Fire Lane signs. This lot is explicitly reserved for Staff, Emergency Vehicles, and Visitors with booked appointments.

Photo Retake Day

Photo Retake Day will take place on October 9. Please note that ID cards will not be provided on retake day.

Parent Council Speaker – Tuesday, October 20

The Lord Beaverbrook High School Parent Council is excited to welcome award-winning psychologist Dr. Caroline Buzanko to LBHS. She’ll help parents recognize the signs of teen mental health and learn how to access supports and strategies that help our teens thrive. This presentation is open to all parents and guardians.

Academic Information

As a reminder, all Math students are expected to bring a calculator to class each day. The school does not have calculators available for students to borrow, and cell phones cannot be used as calculators during class. Please ensure your student comes prepared with a calculator for their Math classes.

Advanced Placement (AP) Students – Important Registration Reminder

If you are registered in an Advanced Placement (AP) class, please make sure that you are enrolled in the correct AP course section in your timetable. Being registered in the AP section is important to ensure that you are properly identified for the AP exam. If you have questions, please speak with your AP teacher.

Athletics

• Interested in trying Field Hockey? Or experienced players wanting to touch up on their skill? The Field Hockey coaches are offering a Field Hockey Boot Camp Sept. 11, 18 and Oct. 2 after school starting at 2:20. No experience required – just bring athletic gear and a water bottle! (Returning players should bring shin guards and a mouth guard.)

Gate Admission is in effect for ALL Football Games

• Adults: $5.00     
• Seniors (65+): $2.00     
• Students: $2.00     
• Under 6: FREE
• Payment by tap is preferred at the gate, although limited cash options will be available if needed.

Student Spectators at Football Games

• Student Spectators: Only students enrolled at one of the schools/teams competing in the game may attend as student spectators. A valid student ID is required upon entry. The Supervising Administrator at the game retains discretion to address unique or exceptional circumstances.

Family Pass Information - Link

• Each athlete will be provided with a Family Pass for (4) which may only be used with an accompanying adult parent/ guardian
• Terms of Use:
  • Must be presented at time of entry
  • Additional family members will need to pay regular gate admission
  • Children under 6 are free
  • Lost, stolen, or forgotten passes will NOT be replaced, and gate admission will need to be paid
  • The Family Pass is only valid for 2026 Regular Season football games. Playoff gate admission fees are still in effect

Apply Alberta Information Session

Grade 12 students are welcome to attend the Apply Alberta session on September 29 during lunch in Room 231. This session will help you with how to apply to post-secondary schools in Alberta.

Course Changes and Course Drop Deadline

Course changes for semester one are now complete.

The deadline to drop a course for semester one is October 30, 2026. Please ensure that if you need to drop a course you book an appointment with your guidance counsellor before this date.

Post Secondary Applications

Beginning October 1, 2026, you can start applying for Post-Secondary institutes in Alberta. An application profile needs to be created on the Apply Alberta website www.applyalberta.ca. Once you application profile has been created you will then select your Post-Secondary institute of choice. For Out of province institutions, please see their websites for application process.

MyPass

myPass is a secure self-service website for Alberta high school students to access their education information

Use myPass to:

• Order transcripts
• View diploma exam results
• View progress towards a credential (diploma or certificate)
• View student personal information
• View and print detailed academic reports (DAR)
• Order additional copies of a credential

Schulich Leader Scholarships

Up to one hundred scholarships are awarded to entrepreneurial-minded high school graduates enrolling in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math program at 20 partner universities across Canada. Half are valued at $100,000 for engineering scholarships and half are valued at $80,000* for science and math scholarships. Terry Fox Humanitarian Award – Applications open November 1, 2026

Terry Fox Humanitarian Awards are open to students of all abilities. To be considered for the Award, applicants must meet be:

• In good academic standing.
• Canadian citizens or landed immigrants.
• Involved in voluntary humanitarian activities (for which they have not been compensated).
• Planning to or are already studying towards their first university degree or diploma at a Canadian post-secondary institution, or entering their 2nd year of CÉGEP in the upcoming academic year.

Loran Scholarship – Deadline October 15, 2026

Loran looks beyond grades and gets to know each applicant through an in-depth selection process that is a personal growth experience in itself. Just applying for the Loran Award is a chance to reflect on your sense of purpose, your contributions to your community, and your goals for effecting meaningful change in the future. It is also a unique opportunity to meet other changemakers like yourself who see the world through a lens of optimism, courage, curiosity, and creativity.

Criteria:

• Be entering university for the first time in September 2027.
• Present a minimum cumulative average of 88%.
• Hold Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.
• Be born between January 1, 2005 and September 1, 2011.

High School IPP Process

Teachers have access to all IPP information from previous CBE schools. Shared IPP information from previous school boards will be entered in early September.

September – Teachers read through IPPs from last year and get to know students. Teacher and student set a target for the semester (usually a skill or behaviour needing improvement related to IPP diagnosis).

October 9 – Draft IPP is sent home for review and request for edits.

LBHS IPP Accommodations

• Classroom accommodations.
• Access to The Learning Lounge after instruction. A space available for students on an IPP to: work, regulate, focus, use a Chromebook, get one-on-one support, use voice typing for written work, and set up exam accommodations. Student may request IPP access or teachers may send student.
• Exam accommodation for multiple-choice exams (audio reader on a Chromebook with headphones in The Learning Lounge).
• Exam accommodation for written response (voice typing on a Chromebook in The Learning Lounge).

Other Information

All students on an IPP have a target for self-advocacy and communication. Students will be reminded and encouraged to use their IPP accommodations, particularly Grade 10s. Students will be reminded and encouraged to communicate with their teachers about strategies and accommodations that have been successful previously or that they'd like to try.

Exam Accommodations

Need to be requested with the teacher at least 1–2 days before an exam. Students need to bring their own headphones for multiple-choice exam reader. Students must use exam accommodations throughout the semester in order to be able to use them for final exams and diploma exams. The Learning Lounge (Room 108) will manage extra time if needed.

CTS Heavy & Light Shops

PPE Information & Clarification

As students get settled into their Heavy Shops classes, we want to share a quick reminder about safety equipment. Safety glasses are provided for all students, while some shops may also require lab coats/coveralls, appropriate footwear, gloves, or hard hats. Some courses may allow students to bring their own PPE if they prefer, provided it meets safety guidelines. Students should speak with their shop teacher for specific PPE requirements and details.

Yearbooks

Yearbooks can be purchased directly through Josten's website to secure your copy. We also have a very limited number of books available from last school year; please reach out to tmwatt@cbe.ab.ca for details. Additionally, students are encouraged to submit artwork related to the theme “This Magic Moment” to be chosen for divider artwork and the cover of the book by October 2. Encourage your student to see The ROAR for more details.

Annual Volunteer Registration Required

To help ensure the safety and security of all students and staff, all volunteers must complete the Annual Volunteer Registration Form each school year before participating in school volunteer activities. This requirement applies to both new and returning volunteers.

• Parents and guardians can register through the SchoolEngage tab in their MyCBE account.
• Volunteers must review and acknowledge the privacy requirements as part of the registration process.
• Community members who do not have a child registered with CBE must complete their registration in person at the school where they wish to volunteer.

Outdoor Club: Important Trip Info!

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 23, after school in the East Courtyard. Our hike to Chester Lake has been approved and students will need to be at two of the three meetings to qualify for the trip along with having paperwork in by September 24, payment made before the trip, signed club member contract, good attendance at school, and a parent attending the mandatory trip meeting.

The D2L shell is up and running, if your student cannot access the D2L shell email sjslaughter@cbe.ab.ca to be added to get access to all the paperwork.

Parent Volunteers Needed for Outdoor Club

Outdoor Club needs parents with Wilderness First Aid (WFA), volunteer registration, and valid police check to help cover supervision on our outdoor excursions throughout the year! LBHS Adventure in Spain! - Spring 2027

LBHS is excited to offer students an educational travel opportunity to Spain during Spring Break 2027! Students will explore several regions of Spain while making connections to Spanish language, culture, history, art, and Social Studies.
